Triumphal Arch CANADA
Triumphal Arch, 2008 Journey to the Center of Uranus CANADA Gallery, NYC Mixed media installation
The departure point for Triumphal
Arch is a large 16th century (1505) multi woodblock print by
Durer. The original print featured
interchangeable woodblock panels, slotted into an architectural scaffold. The panels functioned as propaganda,
and could be removed replaced or relocated depending upon political necessity
or imperial whim. I have redrawn,
reconfigured, and updated Triumphal Arch as a contemporary installation. I have retained some of the original
printing process (woodblock), but have also updated the superstructure with
newer technologies of lithography, silkscreen, photocopy and digital prints. I have replaced narrative panels with
bluescreen, and a number of smaller works. This new narrative panels draw upon
contemporary political, personal and abstract sources. The piece is lit by video, adding a new
layer (and contemporary propaganda genre) to this monumental piece. However, instead of reinforcing
political structure (government) – the players in the video are constantly
subverting and misbehaving within the constraints of Triumphal Arch’s classical
architecture.
